I asked my son and he says it wasn't sharp when he got it. He sharpened it so it is now. We were happy with the quality of the sword.

Yes, it was real steel and surprisingly sharp. Sharp enough that you can cut your finger if you draw it the length of the blade, which I did and don't recommend.

How sturdy is the handle?

The sword handle is sturdy. Attached very well to the sword & doesn't wobble/shift at all.

Is the blade heat treated?

No. It is a poorly machined metal that isn't full tang either.
