Review: The Family Office Book - Prior to purchasing this book through desertcart, I was not familiar with the Family Office business or Richard Wilson. It caught my interest because I am in the process of raising capitial for a distressed mortgage fund, and I thought this could be a new source of capital. The book opened my eyes to whole new business and a source of potential new investors. Richard's insight into the structures and types of Family Offices was very informative, and the interviews with the Family Office executives really gave me a great "hands on" feel on how they think and manage their business. Too often these types of books talk in abstract theories and ideas, that don't always coiniside with realities of the day to day operations of the business. I thought Richard did a great job laying out the book, first explaining the business and then using the professional interviews to "make it real". The information in the chapter on "Family Office Marketing", is not only great as it pertains to Family Office Businesses, but will be valuable to me in terms of building my own business. Well done Richard, Mike Review: The Family Office Book: Investing Capital for the Ultra-Affluent - If you are looking for the definitive book on the how a Family Office works, look no further. I downloaded this on my Kindle over the weekend and couldn't put it down. As a former Wall Street executive who spent more than 20 years in Capital Markets (both debt and equity), I found this book to be meticulously researched, well written and chock full of important, useful information. The embedded multi-media, taking the reader directly from the (Kindle) book to the website to listen to audio interviews and view video presentations was a smart, effective bonus. Here is the skinny on this book. A lot of people THINK they know what a Family Office is and how it works. They don't. This book will quickly become the standard. Why? Because the author, Richard C. Wilson is obviously passionate about this space, his material proves it. Download it now, make it a part of your permanent library, and bookmark the link to his Family Office website. Great book, useful information.
First of all, I cannot tell thank Richard how grateful I am. I could not stop reading the family office book because of its useful contents which are not commonly opened. I believe this book is suitable for people who have to understand family office and its business. Also, professionals working in asset management industry, I recommend reading it and catching a concept arrangement about this field; it contains more than you imagine. Actually, the family office book is fully useful to organize concept of what is family office and what benefit it provide, based on interview with professionals who we cannot talk with. It's surely rare and valuable book. For someone working the field of alternative asset management in Asia, this book will help you widen potential business opportunities.

a true insiders view
buy and read this book to reinforce your gut feeling that FO's and MFO's are wealth preservation/creation/education vehicles, ready to traverse through the landscape of financial services. While many references are made to a specific companies' website, they are not invasive...the authors aim is to further educate and assist. I very much enjoyed the ability to read the many 1 on1 interviews and will probably refer back for some further video and audio data mining. Enjoy!

Excellent read for the investment manager or ultra-affluent family
This was an excellent read and offered very comprehensive insight on Family Office and the UHNW capital sector. Unlike most financially oriented books that tend to be mundane or too technical, The Family Office Book balanced fundamental anecdotal concepts with financial theories and historical narratives relating to the FO industry. It helps investment and asset managers understand the considerations of a UNHW family and also provides an excellent overview for the ultra-affluent when trying to understand the issues they need to be aware of when considering to form a family office.

Great book about family offices
We are starting to market our hedge fund to family offices. I found this book and corresponding videos helpful in developing a broad understanding of family offices, the unique services they offer, and the challenges they face. I feel it did well at demonstrating how each family office is different and then gave examples about the motivations of different practices. The best practices you recommend when working with family offices, while simple, are good to read. I recommend this book to people marketing to family offices.

Lots of Words to Say Very Little
I read about 100 books a year. A percentage of those books are life-changing gems. And then another percentage are dogs. It's worth the effort to get through the dogs to find the gems. But this one is a dog. The author might know a lot about the subject, but you wouldn't know that by reading this book. In fact, you wouldn't know much from reading this book at all. Most of the content is recycled from an earlier chapter. It's also written entirely in passive voice, which makes reading difficult, boring, and unclear. He also attempts to give a marketing lesson on copywriting, which he clearly knows nothing about. The way the book is written is plenty of evidence of that. I earn a considerable living as a marketing professional. Do not take any marketing advice from this book. Period. The interviews seemed cool at first. But then as you read through, it becomes clear that everyone he interviews goes through great efforts to do with the author has done: use a lot of words to say very little. It seems to be endemic to the investment industry. Boring. Difficult. Very little value. Someone has a real opportunity to write a great book on this subject. This wasn't it.

Essentially not much more than interviews
Essentially not much more than interviews. Very disappointing. Maybe, this is what others are looking for, but for me the content does not at all what I expected after having read the description

Extremely Useful!
'Like a family office conference in a book! The interviews were extremely useful to me, since like many other family office professionals, I focus more on my day-to-day job and the experts I deal with rather than networking with others who do what I do. I've learned here that although some family offices have more extensive structures, practices, and information technology in place, there's an extremely wide variety, and many like mine have their own more simple or organically-grown solutions. This helps me understand not only where I am today, but also where I might like to go tomorrow. Not only were the industry overviews useful, but I also enjoyed the variety of interviews about choice of investment strategy and classes (even including indexing!), since that's a big part of what I do. The overview of the family office industry, operating models, structures, processes, expert recommendations, global trends and differences -- all were well-presented and extremely useful. Well done!
