vet recommended - stable urine protein readings
My oldest husky was diagnosed with kidney failure (likely tied to her diabetes diagnosis at about the same time). During our daily pee testing, we were seeing protein at the two highest markers on an intermittent basis early in the spring. Six months later, between these, which my girl comes looking for when she hears the bag crinkle, and two other kidney support formulae, her daily protein results are at 1. So the fact that she enjoys the treat-style chew and we're seeing long-term results make this an easy one for me to recommend.

Wonderful—but so hard to find!
These were recommended by our vet for our paralyzed dachsie (now 14; and she’s such a happy pupper!), as a precaution a few years ago, as she did have a bladder infection. Our little girl LOVES them (I break one into three pieces and use it each day as a treat at the end of her exercises (a set of exercises takes about three minutes [add in four to five bladder expressions a day—squeezing to drain her bladder—and it all takes less than 15 minutes of care a day; sorry, but I had to put in a plug for the ease of caring for a paralyzed dachsie because she is such a joy to have in our family!]). The only downside to this VetriScience product is that it is so hard to find; I just nabbed the very last one available on Amazon. I have to admit they are pricey, but they are effective.

Great alternative to other renal support products for my pups
There is another renal support product that is cheaper but my dogs HATE it! They like these and will eat them right out of the bag. One thing though is put a small slice of bread in the bag as if not by the time you get half way through them they will be hard as a brick and my dogs won't like them. Add a slice of bread and they stay soft and yummy!

So far so good...
We have been feeding these treats do our dog for a year. She is a little over two years old now she had a hard start as a puppy which probably caused her kidney damage. The vet could give us no indication with our extensive testing to see how bad she really was and give us some kind of indication how long it would be before her kidneys shut down. She said her kidneys could stop tomorrow or she could live a year or more. So far our pup is doing good she runs and plays like a puppy still. we also changes her food to Costco's Weight Maintenance one since to is lower in protein and easier on her kidneys. Regarding texture some have complained they are not soft chewy treats and think they may be old. I don't think they are old or stale I think that they are not meant to be soft like a tender Friskies cat treat or hard like a crunchy milk bone. They are in between they have always been the same consistency all year.

GREAT PRODUCT — BUT THEY LET IT MELT INTO A GLOB AND THEN SHIP IT
PRODUCT Rec by Vet. Expensive but supposedly works. Put it on subscribe and save. This summer I received a bag with 60 chews that obviously melted into one big blob., So I thought It was because bit was summer and maybe melted in the ups truck. Just got another bag. End October, Same Problem. Obviously melted in warehouse.b For $50 a bag of 60 chews - you think they could do a better job of protecting it.

Improved Lab Values
I have been giving my 9 year old Jack Russell Terrier ((17 lbs.) one chew a day for the last four months. In addition I give her medication and other supplements. She was diagnosed with glomerulonephritis (early kidney disease) last September Her recent lab work was very good and she shows no symptoms. Although there is no way to know for sure whether this supplement is helping her (since she is also on Enalapril (high blood pressure medication) and an Omega3 catalyst chew both of which she started months before Rensl Essentials), certain lab values have improved so I will continue to give her this supplement. Also, my dog loves the taste and looks forward to her “treat.”

Same bag, product differs. Doesn’t smell or look same. BEWARE!
We bought this before, dog liked taste. It didn’t help keep dog’s kidney function from climbing, but dog ate it so we reordered. This time it’s a completely different item, aside from the bag. It looks different, has a different texture, and a very noticeably different smell. So now the dog won’t eat it at all! So in summary, when you order there’s not enough quality control to be sure you’re going to get the same product, it’s a $70 crap shoot. And, from the first order, it apparently doesn’t work at all to help dogs with CKD. Buyer beware, they’re abusing desperate dog owners trying beyond hope to treat their sick dog.

Don't waste your money
Don't waste your money. This might be a great supplement, but it doesn’t taste good to dogs, so they refuse to eat it.
