Rather than the 500 dollar rework hot air guns the heating mode is AWESOME. I'm an engineer who does rather shabby work ...
Do not buy this tool if you are not experienced with a gas blow torch. It is a skilled trade item and can be quite damaging to work surfaces and spots on your skin if clearly incompetent. This is the most versatile tool I have ever used. Rather than the 500 dollar rework hot air guns the heating mode is AWESOME. I'm an engineer who does rather shabby work and this tool makes me look more professional than my 30 years of making electronic toys. The soldering mode is very powerful and can work small or large sinks side by side.I broke one putting it in the soldering holder where the hot air was blowing down at the table. It somehow overheated something in the unit and its not really possible to "mail" back full of butane. The warranty is therefore useless on this item. Keep it nearly horizontal between uses and idling, also read the ignition instructions. Its not a ligher there is a special way you need to hold the button down for multiple seconds to get it to ignite. Its so badass I immediately bought another one.Oh and it looks so awesome. The clear window to see the compressed gas and the fine workmanship of the body of the device. Home run cooper tools ...

Very pleased!
I purchased this unit to replace an old Bluepoint butane soldering iron that I have misplaced. At first I was disappointed when I received the soldering iron, as it did not come with a case and accessories as my previous butane soldering iron did. However, those feeling were quickly dismissed after a few uses of this iron.As a test engineer, I set up many electrical tests. These tests require 30AWG instrumentation wire soldered onto the wires of electrical harnesses, which sometimes can be into the thousands of circuits. I use a Weller digital soldering station for this task when assembling these harnesses on the bench before they are plugged into the test fixtures. Many times when fixturing these massive harnesses into position inside environmental chambers, the 30AWG wire will sometimes break, or more circuits are to be instrumented as they are inside the environmental chambers. This is where the butane soldering iron comes in.The iron performed flawlessly. I cannot attest to the three hour usage on a single charge of butane, as stated in the description. I can say that the iron is ready to use almost immediately, though the description says ready to use in thirty seconds. I have used this so far soldering 30AWG wire to circuits as large as 10AWG wire using lead-free solder with impressive results using the supplied chisel tip. The build quality is top notch; even the plastic parts feel of stout construction. No disappointment whatsoever!

Unit was DOA. Coercing a return was difficult.
The Self-Igniting aspect of this soldering iron was not in evidence. Weller is a good brand and the occasional defective unit is a fact of life. However . . . Arranging a return was difficult. The vendor refused to accept a return, saying that it was purchased through Amazon and Amazon had to handle it. Amazon said that the sale was handled by the vendor and the vendor had to handle it. The vendor evidently has limited office hours and emails 'would be answered when the office was open'. A return was eventually, grudgingly, effected.I can recommend the Pyropen. I won't recommend the vendor.

no match for a normal electrical temperature controlled iron
heats up rather slowly and struggles on bigger joints while not being precise enough for small work. just get something like a pinecil if you need portability. or just put a inverter on a regular station.

blows away all other butane soldering irons
Given the option, I prefer to use my Weller plug-in base station with adjustable temp tip. This beauty is slick enough to stand in without making me grumble too much. I had another Pyropen for many years before wearing it out. (Actually, it may only need a new burner.)The Pyropen heats up quickly, has adjustable temperature and a variety of tips to choose from. My only grumble is watching the fingers from that exhaust port. But if you want a portable soldering iron, this is it. I've tried almost every other gas and battery-powered unit out there, and nothing else is even close. Extremely reliable.

The only thing I dont like about this soldering iron is how phallic it looks
This soldering iron has met all of my expectations. I work in the pits and bilges of a US Navy warship and this soldering iron has helped me tin and season leads that are well over 10 years old with success. The only thing I dont like about this soldering iron is how phallic it looks. I wish it was boxy in design but Its a very small complaint because i can expand on the fact that my friends dont know how to solder and fix their equipment on the spot. This is great for doing a quality job all the time given that you have solder on hand and some fresh termination leads. I love this iron and I get plenty of compliments. Hey ladies ;)

Well worth the price
It heats up quickly and the fuel chamber lasts a long time. The tip is good quality - doesn't discolor or oxidize like cheaper tips do.

Very handy, but not perfect.
This is a super useful tool, as long as it isn't your only iron. This is my 4th one. I am an Audio Visual installer, and am definitely a heavy user, but these are not the most reliable items. When you have to click it 20 times to light it, it gets very annoying, and you can't manually ignite them with a lighter. Eventually they just stop working, and this one is replacing one that melted itself on a job site.BUT, they are ridiculously handy when working up high, anywhere you can't get mains power, or where a proper station is not practical. Gets to temperature very quickly and the tips have great heat capacitance. In spite of the reliability issues, I still recommend.

By far and large the best gas soldiering iron.
I use gas soldering irons everyday in my work. I've used many brands and styles of gas soldering irons but this trumps them all.Lights everytime with ease.Is very powerful and can solder large wires. No silly multiple safety switches and crap.
