Melissa McCarthy is masterful in the captivating account — based on a true story — of Lee Israel, a best-selling celebrity biographer in the 1970s and ’80s. When Lee (McCarthy) comes to the realisation that she’s no longer en vogue, she spins her art form into a perilous web of lies, deceit and outright crime to get back on top.

Amusing and Entertaining from start to finish1
I loved this quirky, unusual film. It was story I had vaguely heard about and this film put flesh on the bones of what i had assumed to be an urban legend. Well worth the watch.

No really a comedy
This film was not full of laughs like the other Melissa Maccarthy films, but a reasonable film to watch as it is based on a true story

A moving reflection on the decline of a once top selling author.
Melissa McCarthy portrays the much troubled life of Lee Israel with compassion and sensitivity, a commendable performance, as is the part of Jack Hock played by Richard E. Grant, indeed the entire casting is first rate. I enjoyed this film so much, I watched it twice in 3 days, it is humbling story of what happens when a best selling author falls down the ladder and her books no longer interest publishers, she ends up in poverty, unable to pay her rent arrears and when her adored pet cat falls ill the veterinary surgeon refuses to treat her until the outstanding account is cleared. In desperation Lee Israel turns to crime in the form of fraud and deception, assisted by her downtrodden gay friend Jack Hock who ends up making things worse not better. It is a deeply moving story and I couldn't help feeling somehow on her side, given her plight it is difficult not to even considering that what she did was so wrong. One of the best cinema release films I have seen for a while

Excellent film well worth looking at

Atmospheric movie.
Since it’s about a middle aged lesbian who lives with a cat you might think this flick would have a somewhat limited audience. However it has rewatch ability thanks to its soundtrack and locations, plus the fact the two principles have found the parts they are probably going to be remembered for.

Engaging stranger than fiction film
Though vastly different from her comedic roles, Melissa Mccarthy does not disappointe. Extremely enjoyable film.

Devilishly good fun!
I got to see this film at last fall's Toronto Film Festival. I loved it so much, I was anxious to have my own copy, so I was able to order it from Amazon. It is a fun look at how Lee Israel, played by Melissa McCarthy, a struggling author of biographies, tried to make ends meet by embarking on a life of crime! She gets caught in the end, but the story is really engrossing, and is told with great wit. A must-see!
