Just right for 7 year old; great for father-son bonding...
My seven year old son is very outdoorsy. He plays football, martial arts, and swims. But he and his dad are Star Wars fans. it was a total hit. Bot he and his dad bonded while putting this together. The instructions are simple, yet interesting enough for him. The pictures are clear. At times he actually caught on faster than my husband and then he proudly showed his dad "how to do it right". It took them about 4 hours over a period of two nights. They took their time, enjoyed conversations about Star Wars movies, actors and actresses, and capped off each night by watching a favourite Star Wars movie! The kit was complete. All the small bags containing the tiny pieces were clearly labelled. The instruction book was in colour, with clear pictures and instructions, and moving from one completed piece to another was a pleasure for both of them. I was worried that the small pieces would be annoying, but they enjoyed the detail that the small pieces made possible! The final product was amazingly detailed. Whoever designed this thing is a genius. I'm not a Lego fan. I haven't got the patience for this. I'd rather read a good book. But even I got excited and tried my hand at it for a while when I saw how beautiful it was going to be.We'll definitely get more of these as soon as we can find the space to display them!

A Permanent Fixture in any LEGO Star Wars Collection
This is has already become a classic set, despite the fact that LEGO have released two sets of the famous X-Wing in this scale in the past. While the price was high at the initial release, the $48 price point (as of the time of this review) seems very reasonable and as I'm trying to build a 5 wing squadron, I'm nearly there and thrilled with the quality of the build, the design and the durability of this set. Many of the more complicated LEGO sets have a tendency to be flimsier than their more simple siblings, but this ship is solid all the way through, except for the obvious thruster and S-Foil blaster elements, which can't be helped. The minifigures are great here as well: Luke (with a ton of details on the figure), Jek Porkins and two R2 units. The whole set can be assembled in about 40 minutes to an hour (depending on how well you work when building the identical pairs of wings) and though I've lost one small set of the elastic bands that keep the wings closed, any small white band will work as a replacement. When you factor in LEGO has built this set in 1:1 scale for display in Legoland, this will always be a famous set and one that any Star Wars or LEGO fan should have in their possession.

If you have a young Star Wars fan in the house, then this is worth a look
Lego and Star Wars are favourites in my house. Putting the two together into a Lego X-Wing Starfighter is a winner for my kids (6 & 8). The model is reasonnably accurate with retracting nose gear and varaible wing geometry controlled via a wheel at the back. There is a choice of 2 pilot minifigures and 2 droid minifigures. Luke and R2-D2 are the only ones who get a look in in our house! The model only took a couple of hours to make, so it will not give hours of entertainment during construction. The instructions are clear and the use of sequentially numbered parts bags means that not too much time is spent sorting through a pile of pieces to find the one that you need. I recommend having a few plastic bowls or food containers on hand to keep the parts in during construction so as to avoid losing any.Once constructed, it's a great reproduction X-wing and gives hours of fun play. Highly recommended if your kids like Lego or Star Wars (or both).

Really good, but not perfect
Don't get me wrong: this is a great set . . . My daughters and I loved putting it together and I'm glad we bought it. All props to Lego for the complicated gear system for opening and closing the S-foils (i.e. "wings" to non-nerds) but the final product kind of rubs me the wrong way (unlike the companion set 9492 TIE fighter, which is perfect). R2 sits in there sideways. The tips of the lasers are dishes, which is all wrong. The stickers on the engine intakes seem like a cop out. Bur the worst feature is definitely the canopy; it looks nothing like the X-wing canopy. Maybe if Lego spent a little more attention to replicating the details of the original (like, I don't know . . . THIS GUY [...] ) . . . then I would've given it 5 stars for sure.

A great LEGO model
I purchased this for my 4.5 year old son. He was very excited that we'd be building it. He and I built it over 4 evenings. I mostly did the quality control and application of stickers, and he did parts picking and assembly. The final product looks nice and is fun to assemble. The toy is very sturdy and is fun to play with. The wings fold and unfold with a turn of a cross handle at the back of the ship. I just wish the handle was more seamlessly integrated into the fighter's design, but, in all honesty, it is not an eyesore. There are two minifigs included with the fighter (two are robots), and they add to the game play.I will probably get the Tie Fighter to have the bad guys' and the good guys' spaceships, but, meanwhile, we will probably just use the Batwing from Lego set #6863.

Highly recommended
An excellent model, especially at this price point. It seems exceedingly solid and is capable of being played with, unlike some other more display-oriented models. The gearing setup for the wing-opener is simple but interesting, snapping nicely into place when they're open.I believe this is the only set with Porkins, too... so if you want the full set, you'll need this. He's more of a bonus than anything else though, since the model is so good.My only complaint is that they didn't offer parts for a simple stand to allow the wings to be open when it's not being flown around - but if you've got other LEGO pieces sitting around, that's not exactly a major issue, and since it's not the lightest set ever, they'd have had to make it more expensive or remove parts from the model itself... which I'd rather they didn't. :P
