i am aware there are arguments for both !?___& i offer no disparagement, i'm just writing what i like___for me (reading certain things) i don't want to just receive & process 'data'___there are certain 'things' (classic works) that i don't want to just read, i want to experience, think & contemplate the action i make when i'm reading the book . i want my arm to get tired holding the book, i want to feel the WEIGHT of it in my bag & my hands, i WANT to reach for the book & have to 'heave' it out of my bag & have the book fall open to the place i last left off at___when i've decided on the next book i want to read i then search a little for THE VERSION (within reason) of that book___i have been lucky with moby-dick (Modern Library) by Herman Melville and Rockwell Kent (30 May 1994) & homer (Iliad & The Odyssey, The (Barnes & Noble Leatherbound Classic Collection) [Bonded Leather])___& AGAIN i've been lucky THIS version of dq, THIS version of dq is EXACTLY to my hopes & expectations, it's a BEAUTIFUL 'tome' encased in a sleeve, a tome you have to slide out of the sleeve as you want to read, the action like opening the gateway to the place you are about to enter, the anticipation of whats to follow …___i am COMPLETELY & UTTERLY DELIGHTED !!! & COMPLETELY & UTTERLY EXCITED !!! in finding this version, a version so beautifully illustrated, that i am literally 'giddy' with excitement at the prospect of making it to the 'other side' of this most famous of works (& the pleasure of reaching each illustration as a short visual resting/ 'feasting') point on my journey …___wish me luck :-DDDD___enthusiastically LOL___ben grieve edinburgh, uk

A beautifully presented book, as are all those published by the Folio Society. This translation, however, is an old one, written by Tobias Smollett in the 18th century. The language therefore is rather archaic and requires greater concentration.There are more modern translations which could have been chosen for this wonderful tale.

A literary classic, Smollet's translation is delightful to read, though the book could use better introductory and critical essays. The glossing is primarily to other sources and not explanatory. Not a good student edition, but a good edition for someone who knows the text already.
