Mk4 / F-type Springs Are Identified By a Number Which is Punched Into the Screw In Tag At the Top Of the Spring On More Recent Springs, Whereas, On Early Springs There is No Screw In Tag, Just Two Loops Of Spring Wire, the Number On These Early Springs is Found On the Side Of the White Plastic Collar. Please View the Spring Identification Chart Images To Assist You In Ordering the Correct Spring For the Door Being Repaired. We Strongly Recommend Replacing These Springs In Pairs As Often the Other Spring is Not Far From the End Of Its Serviceable Life Anyway. It just needs to be prised off with a screwdriver. The old spring is probably broken. Remove old spring by removing pin. It's on top of the steel door frame. Pull down Spring and remove runner clip from the runner bracket. The spring is not fixed at the bottom. It should just lift out. To fit replacement, leave door nearly fully open. It will need to be propped or have a helper. Push eye of new Spring up through top hole of door frame. Push new clip through on top. It goes sideways. The eye is retained by the indent of the clip. The hooked end is misleading. The door may need moving slightly. Pull the plastic runner clip on the new Spring down and back into the runner. Let it then move back up and clip into the runner of the door. Push the rest of the Spring unit back into the runner. Again, it's not fixed at the bottom. Put the cover strip back on. I lined it up and tapped it back with a hammer. Job done. Took me less than an hour to do both. Just be careful! Eye protection is worth using just in case. The springs can be a bit difficult to fit, if you have not done it before. I made feeding the thinner top spring easier, buy bending a welding electrode into a hook, I then fed this through the spring eye and pushed that through the hole at the top of the channel. Once the welding electrode is through, you can unhook it, whilst holding the spring with your other hand, then insert the anchor pin.
